Olympic gymnast visits Napa to promote 2012 trials

The city of Allen, Texas is pretty darn proud of Carly Patterson.

Patterson was the 2004 Summer Olympic Games all-around gold medalist in women’s gymnastics for the U.S. She won an additional two silver medals at Athens, Greece on the balance beam and in the team competition.
For all of that, Allen threw her a parade upon her return home. There are still signs in town that read, “Home of Olympian Carly Patterson.”
Patterson retired from competitive gymnastics in 2006 at the age of 18, but remains close to the sport. She was at Napa’s Gymnastics Zone on Walnut Street early Saturday to promote next year’s Olympic Trials, which will be held June 28 to July 1, 2012 at HP Pavilion in San Jose. Patterson was also on hand to meet with young gymnasts, answering their questions about the sport.

Gymnastics Zone competes at state meet

For a competitive gymnast, making it to state level competition is somewhat akin to an actor being nominated for an academy award: just making it that far is an honor. The nine members of the Level 4 girls team at The Gymnastics Zone in Napa, mostly younger gymnasts in their very first seasons on the competition floor, not only scored high enough during their regular season to qualify for state competition — every one did it by the time they had completed their second meet of the season.

A field of 339 gymnasts, considered by their season scores to be the best of the best in Northern California, competed in the two-day competition. The girls were divided into age groups in such small ranges that many of them were competing in a field all alone for the very first time in their careers. Nerves were high, but so were their qualifications:

Gymnasts celebrate Moon Festival

While many gymnastics competitions at this time of year feature a Halloween theme, the gymnasts at the Gymnastics Zone competed in a differently themed meet. The 2011 Moon Festival Invitational hosted by Redwood Empire Gymnastics in Petaluma celebrated the Chinese Moon Festival, or mid-autumn festival.

The Moon Festival meet was the last of the regular season and it gave the gymnasts many things to celebrate — for some it was the completion of their first season as a competitive gymnast, for others it was the triumph of beating personal bests — but for all of the girls from Napa, it was the celebration that they were all moving on to Championship competition in the coming weeks.
